I did this with my 3-5 gifted students while learning about GMOs. This fit perfectly into my unit. Thank you for such a well put together and engaging resource.

lesson overview

Manipulating Genetics: GMO STEM Unit

Students will complete a hands-on apple observation of GMO and non-GMO apples, giving students the opportunity to look, smell, touch and taste the different varieties. Building from this experience, students will explore key genetic concepts on GMOs through readings, videos, and discussions. Students will then apply this concept to a classroom debate researching the pros and cons of GMOs.  As an application of knowledge, students will also investigate GMO products and labeling. A final assessment is provided, along with a brief introduction to hybrids for students to have the opportunity to compare and contrast hybrids to GMO’s.

Key Science Concepts:

  • Humans can influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms.

  • GMOs are created using modern advances in biotechnology that allow scientists to directly modify the DNA of microorganisms and crops.

  • Genetically engineered crops produce higher yields, have a longer shelf life, are resistant to diseases and pests, and even taste better.

  • Genetically modified foods do cause controversy. Genetic engineering typically changes an organism in a way that would not occur naturally.
