Genetics STEM Unit: Hybrid Apple Science + Produce Engineering Design (5E Model)
Students will complete a hands-on apple observation of hybrid and non-hybrid apples, giving students the opportunity to look, smell, touch and taste the different varieties. Building from this experience, students will explore key genetic concepts on hybrids through readings, videos, and discussions.
Grades: 4th - 8th

Manipulating Genetics: Hybrid STEM Unit Overview
Students will complete a hands-on apple observation of hybrid and non-hybrid apples, giving students the opportunity to look, smell, touch and taste the different varieties. Building from this experience, students will explore key genetic concepts on hybrids through readings, videos, and discussions. Students will then apply this concept to a produce engineering design lab, where teams design their own unique hybrid based on criteria and customer demand. A final assessment is provided, along with a brief introduction to GMOs for students to have the opportunity to compare and contrast hybrids to GMOs.
Key Science Concepts:
Humans can influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms.
A hybrid cross is when two genetically different individuals breed. They give their offspring a mix of traits that comes from both parents.
Hybrid crosses are a natural way of manipulating genes and take many years.
Hybrid crosses may lead to increased crop yield, make produce disease resistant, and make them more delicious.
