Science Fair Guide: Steps to Success

Science Fair is an opportunity for students to develop science process skills and deepen conceptual understanding in an authentic experience.

The goal of this guide is to provide an overview of Science Fair for educators. We warn you - the process of science is messy! Although the scientific method may look linear, it moves back and forth from observation, hypothesis, and experimentation. This may feel a bit chaotic at times, but allowing students to take the lead will increase their confidence, understanding, and engagement in science!

In this guide, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the nature of science

  • Learn the steps of a Science Fair

  • See real student examples

Steps For Success: The guide will provide detailed explanations for each step of Science Fair including student sample work, resource links, and videos.

  1. Understanding Science

  2. Ask a Testable Question

  3. Research

  4. Form a Hypothesis

  5. Design & Test Experiment

  6. Analyze Data
