Just in time to prepare for a Solar Eclipse! Students are on a mission to build a viewer that will allow them to see the solar eclipse or other bright lights without damaging their eyes. Given the knowledge of how a pinhole viewer works, students must design, build, and test a viewer to complete the challenge.

This design challenge that allows students to work in teams, apply the engineering design process, and connect science topics to real-world applications. The teacher will provide the structure to the project, but students will take an active role in designing and building their own pinhole projectors.

This packet includes:

  • Detailed educator guide with links to resources

  • Student handouts including a Solar and Lunar Eclipse information sheet, eclipse picture comparison and vocab sheet, and pinhole projection science handout

  • Student recording packet for each step of the engineering design process

  • Reflection questions

BONUS CONTENT:
Plan and execute your own Solar Eclipse viewing party with the included planning and activity guide. Banners, activity notes, instructions, and fact sheets are included for 3 activity stations: ultraviolet light sensor making, pinhole projectors, and solar eclipse art!
